W3C update - XML-related activities at the World Wide Web
Consortium

This work at the W3C involves five Working Groups directly
within the XML Activity (Fragments, Infoset, Linking, Schema,
and Syntax) as well as the XSL and DOM Working Groups. This
report will cover the progress in all these areas.
ISO
update - international standards for document description
and processing

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
has a full-fledged sub-committee (SC34) dedicated to the SGML
family of standards. This session reports on the status of
SC34 standards, including SGML (basis for XML), DSSSL (basis
for XSL), HyTime (important basis for XPath, XLink, and XPointer),
Topic Maps ISMID, and other related standards. As SC34 is
meeting prior to the conference, the most current information
will be presented at this session.
OASIS - interoperability, conformance and standards for structured
information
Karl F.Best, OASIS
Based in the Boston area, OASIS, the Organization for
the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, is a
nonprofit, international consortium dedicated to accelerating
the adoption of product-independent formats based on public
standards. These standards include XML, SGML, HTML and CGM
as well as others that are related to structured information
processing. Members of OASIS are providers, users and specialists
of the technologies that make these standards work in practice.

Mr. Best has been involved with OASIS since its founding as
SGML Open in 1992, and served on the board of directors in
1997-98. He was previously employed by Novell, Adobe, and
Sun Microsystems, designing and implementing systems for the
creation and delivery of electronic documentation using structured
information standards. He has been a long-time participant
in standards efforts related to XML and SGML, and a speaker
at numerous conferences.
DISA
standards update

DISA, a Virginia-based not-for-profit association, is
the leading provider of educational and networking forums
on e-business. Promoting e-commerce in a global marketplace,
DISA provides technical and management services to standards
and XML specification development organizations, including
the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12, the OpenTravel
Alliance, the Interactive Financial Exchange Forum, the Mortgage
Industry Standards Maintenance Organization, Open Philanthropy
Exchange, and the XML/EDI Group.
DISA's affiliation with the Electronic Business XML (ebXML)
Initiative, Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association,
EC User Groups and other emerging initiatives around the world
facilitates an interchange of specifications in the international
marketplace. In other international arenas, DISA and ASC X12
serve as the entry point for the United States into the United
Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce
and Transport (UN/EDIFACT), an international standard relating
to the exchange of trade goods and services.
IDEAlliance
standards update

IDEAlliance is the non-profit, vendor-neutral affiliate
established by GCA to promote the development of open interoperability
standards for eBusiness. IDEAlliance specializes in providing
technical, promotional, educational and administrative support
to both vertical and cross-industry organizations engaged
in the development of such standards. This session provides
an update of IDEAlliance standards development activities,
including CPExchange (Customer Profile Exchange Network),
ICE (Information and Content Exchange), PRISM (Publishing
Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata) and XTM (XML
Topic Maps for the Web).
