plenaries. There is also an interim plenary on Thursday
afternoon.
This
year’s opening keynote plenary begins with Jeanne
El Andaloussi of AIS who introduces a roadmap to the
wide array of foundation, horizontal, and vertical
application standards and offers a model to help understand
their uses and relationships. This model will be referred
to throughout the conference as a point of orientation
to the many faces of XML.
Two
large XML users then provide an insight into how the
use of XML is changing their business’ technology.
Christian Lienert of SAP discusses SAP’s current use
of XML in their technology and their vision for the
future of XML in eCommerce. Kenneth M. Brooks, Jr.
of Barnes and Noble presents their use of XML in the
world of trade book publishing where they are merging
two types of workflow to create a highly successful
digital printing operation using XML.
On
Thursday afternoon, delegates have the opportunity
to hear presentations on the need for software to
support standards. Norbert Mikula of DataChannel examines
the issue of standards based software development
from the vendor's perspection while Eric Garcia of
Sabre discusses the world of standards and eCommerce
affecting the travel industry. This session is followed
by a lively panel discussion
(see Vendor Panel Questions
below) on the availability of and support for
standards by large vendors, including IBM, Microsoft,
and Sun.
At
Friday’s closing plenary, Mike Rogers of Sun Microsystems
and Edd Dumbill, Managing Editor of XML.com bring
the conference to a close with reflections on current
trends and visions for the future.
