Kal Ahmed is Principal Consultant with Ontopia. He has
been involved in structured information standards for
6 years as a developer and consultant. He is a member
of the Topicmaps.Org Working Group which produced the
XML Topic Maps (XTM) specification and has presented
a number of papers relating to topic maps and their
practical uses. Kal is also the developer and maintainer
of TM4J, an open source topic map processor written
in Java.

Anderson was born and educated in Perth, Western Australia,
studying Engineering and teaching before leaving to
see what else the world had to offer. After working
in a range of careers from professional gorilla to
field manager for geological data acquisition projects,
he settled in the Netherlands where he moved into
IT training, programming and documentation. Painful
experiences with an SGML-based information system
for software products led to the formation with Jim
Gabriel of Barbadosoft. His role as CTO involves research
into current XML standards and innovations and design
of future product functionality, as well as some Java
programming, an issue yet to be fully accepted by
the engineering team.

Auillans, born in 1975, graduated from the University
of Bordeaux I (France) in computer sciences. He started
a PhD at the University of Bordeaux I Computer science
department (LaBRI) in 2000 with Olivier Baudon and
Andre Raspaud in the field of graph theory. At the
same time he is working for Mondeca, a firm involved
in Topic Maps software development. His PhD project
deals with graph theory concepts (such as clustering)
applied to semantic graphs.

I. Baudon's main topic concerns graphs, interconnection
networks and computer tools for graph theory. He is
working with the company Mondeca since 1999 on graph

F. Best is the Director of Technical Operations for
OASIS, the Organization for the Advancement of Structured
Information Standards. Based in the Boston area, OASIS
is a nonprofit, international consortium dedicated
to accelerating the adoption of product-independent
formats based on public standards. These standards
include XML, SGML, HTML and CGM as well as others
that are related to structured information processing.
Members of OASIS are providers, users and specialists
of the technologies that make these standards work
in practice. Information about OASIS may be found
at www.oasis-open.org. Mr. Best has been involved
with OASIS since its founding as SGML Open in 1993,
and was a director and Chief Strategy Officer of the
consortium in 1997-98. He was previously employed
by Novell, Adobe, and Sun Microsystems, designing
and implementing systems for the creation and delivery
of electronic documentation using structured information
standards. He has been a long-time participant in
standards efforts related to XML and SGML, and a speaker
at numerous conferences.

Software AG since 1993 as a developer and systems
architect for object-oriented distributed applications
and complex documentary workflow automation systems
(automation of the editorial process for the budget
of the European Community, automation of the legislative
procedures for the Belgian French Community Parliament,
etc). All these applications have in common their
use of SGML, either as a document storage and exchange
medium, or as a formal message specification tool
for communications between distributed application
processes. He obtained a degree, specializing in electromechanical
engineering, from the Free University of Brussels
in 1992.

Since
the earliest moments of the Topic Maps paradigm, Michel
Biezunski has several times played the primary role
in making topic maps useful, significant, popular,
and understandable. He was the instigator of the ISO
standardization process for topic maps, and he was
a founding Chair of TopicMaps.Org, the host of the
XTM (XML Topic Maps) Specification. He is still working
to merge knowledge-based approaches with information
management systems, both by designing custom applications
and by fostering the development of new standards
for the Web. Michel is leading a new series of seminars
on Global Knowledge Interchange, as well as his longstanding
Topic Maps Workshops.

She chairs the ISO TC 154 US TAG, X12/XML Core Components,
X12 Materials Management, and is co-chair of the ebXML
Core Components Project Team. In the international
ebXML arena, she represents AIAG, the Automotive Industry
Action Group. She spent over thirty years working
at a major steel company, the last twelve working
closely with the automotive industry in various areas
of electronic commerce.

jobs at DEC and GTE, he became Manager of the New
Oxford English Dictionary Project in 1987, co-founded
Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq:OTEX) in 1989, and built
one of the first successful commercial Internet search
engines in 1995. Between 1996 and 1999 served as an
independent consultant for, among others, IBM, Microsoft,
Netscape, Adobe, the United Nations, the European
Union, the Government of Canada, A.T. Kearney, and
Merrill Lynch. During this period, serving as an invited
expert for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), he
co-invented XML and served as co-editor of the W3C
recommendations "XML 1.0" and "Namespaces
in XML." Since mid-1999 he has served as founder
and CEO of Antarctica Systems Inc. (http://antarcti.ca)

a printing and publishing background, Martin Bryan
started to work with SGML in 1986, writing the first
textbook on the subject in 1987. After a spell as
SGML Products Manager for the Sema Group, an international
consultancy group, he went on to set up his own company,
The SGML Centre, in 1992. Since 1996 Martin has been
working with the European Commission to enhance awareness
of standards relating to the Information Society,
first through the Open Information Initiative, and
since February 2000 through the Diffuse Project. Other
standardization activities relate to the introduction
of XML into the EDI arena, particularly through the
ebXML initiative. Martin also chairs the CEN/ISSS
EC Workshop working group on Defining and Managing
Semantics and Datatypes.

for innovation in information technology for work
in decision support at John Deere Health. He has earned

Kinecta, Ms. Burman was president and CEO of L A Burman

to starting her own company, Ms. Burman was director

that, she was the publishing evangelist at Apple Computer.
Previously, she held business and technical positions
in the local area networking industry.

Technical Strategy Director, Stuart's responsibilities
lie in the field of defining, planning, and portraying
TIE's future technical direction. This includes working
with external partners to build strategic relationships
and representation in international, technical, eBusiness
forums especially EDI/XML initiatives such as ebXML.
Stuart has been involved in the field of eBusiness
since 1989 when his career started after graduating
from Loughborough University of Technology with a
degree in Electronic and Manufacturing Engineering.
Initially EDI project manager for ICL, Stuart then
moved to manage the technical assessment activities
in the Western European EDIFACT Board based within
the European Commission. After a period involved with
EDI software development he was invited to lead the
eCommerce activities in the European Standards Institutes
(CEN) European Board for EDI/EC Standardization (EBES).
Before joining TIE in January 2001, Stuart worked
as Solutions Director for CMASS/Vintura where he managed
and was involved in diverse eBusiness projects.

John Chelsom is Managing Director of CSW Informatics,

systems in medicine. Since founding CSW Informatics

in Reuters Chief Technology Office, and represents

strategies to product groups within Reuters to co-ordinate
the business usage of XML and leverage the best available
solutions. This includes both general XML technologies
and specific vertical market XML languages. His background
includes developing software for technical analysis
and & financial graphics, developing multimedia
& Web applications, and theoretical & experimental

and co-founder of ISOGEN International, a full-service

April 1999. Before ISOGEN, Corkern was the director
of consulting for Insight Data Systems, which was
acquired by Highland Consulting, at which time she
became the director of professional services. During
her time at Highland, Corkern helped develop and implement
project plans for large-scale documentation systems
based on SGML. She also has held positions at Ericsson
Network Systems and Intergraph Corporation as an SGML
specialist and technical writer. Corkern currently
is a member of the Graphic Communications Association
(GCA) Board and has been a speaker and/or co-chair
at a variety of national conferences and industry

Cotton joined Microsoft in May 2000 and is currently
Program Manager of XML Standards. Paul has 28 years
of experience in the Information Technology industry.
He has been involved in computer standards work since
1988 when he began representing Fulcrum Technologies
in the SQL Access Group where he was heavily involved
in the development of the SQL Call-Level Interface
(CLI), which is the de jure standard based on ODBC.
Paul has represented his employer and Canada on the
ISO SQL and SQL/Multi-Media committees since 1992
and was the Editor of the SQL/MM Full-Text and Still
Image documents from 1995 until joining Microsoft.
Paul was a founding member in the consortium efforts
to standardize JDBC and SQLJ, which provide interfaces
to SQL for the Java language. Paul has been participating
in the W3C XML Activity since mid-1998 when he became
IBM's prime representative on the XML Linking and
Infoset Working Groups. Paul has been chairperson
of the XML Query Working Group and a member of the
XML Coordination Group since September 1999. Paul
was elected to the W3C Advisory Board in June 2000
soon after joining Microsoft. Paul is also Microsoft's
alternate on the XML Protocol Working Group.

Cousins is a Consultant/Analyst at RivCom, a consultancy
and services company specialising in helping businesses
adopt XML technologies to meet their information management
and distribution needs. His current focus is on the
development of DTDs, schemas and other models. He
is also actively involved in the application of Topic
Maps and NewsML. Jay has an M.Sc. (Distinction) in
Analysis, Design, and Management of Information Systems
from The London School of Economics, where his dissertation
was entitled "Language and communication: its
role in the creation of meaning and understanding
in the information systems development process".
He also has a First Class Honours degree in English
with Comparative Literature.

Cruikshank is a Technical Fellow with The Boeing Company
in the area of graphics and digital data interchange.
He is also the Chief Technical Officer of the CGM
Open consortium. He has several years of experience
with SGML and CGM interchange. He is the co-chair
of the ATA Graphics Working Group and has led projects
within Boeing to convert maintenance information to
SGML compliant with the ATA interchange DTD's. He
is the technical architect of the ATA intelligent
graphics model.

has been with Progressive Information Technologies
since December 1997. As Training Manager, he is responsible
for all Training and Support for TARGET 2000, Progressive's
Content Management Database Software as well as Training
in related areas such as Tagging Standards, and Editorial
Software and Composition Software. Beyond this support,
his duties include designing and presenting all customer
(and sales force) TARGET 2000 training, conducting
product demonstrations, seminars, and tutorials, set-up
and operation of trade shows and expos, and acting
as liaison between Progressive's Database Department
and the rest of the database, content management,
editorial software community. Before joining Progressive
Information Technologies, Mike spent eight years as
an independent integrator of practice and patient
management database software, and prior to that, did
time selling AT&T communications systems, FAX
machines, and computers.
