Janne Saarela
Dr.
Janne Saarela has participated in eletronic publishing
projects at European Laboratory of Particle Physics
(CERN) and at Helsinki University of Technology. From
1997 until 1999 he was a visiting engineer at the
W3C and at the Eurecom institute in France. During
this time he participated in an EU project and built
one of the parsers for Resource Description Framework
(RDF) type of metadata. Since 1999 Mr. Saarela has
been the technical lead of Profium Ltd in the development
of content management software solutions. Mr. Saarela
is also a frequent speaker at XML seminars.

Airi
Salminen is visiting professor at the University of
Waterloo, Department of Computer Science, in Canada,
while on leave from the University of Jyväskylä
in Finland. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science
from the University of Tampere in 1989. She was responsible
for planning a new Master's Program in Digital Media
at the University of Jyväskylä and has headed
the program from its beginning in 1995. She has been
the leader of several projects where research has
been tied to document management development efforts
in major Finnish companies or public sector organizations.
Her current research interests include document management,
structured documents, XML, user interfaces, and software
environments.

senior product manager with Adobe Systems, Andrew
Salop is responsible for driving the company's cross-media
asset management strategy. With a background in film
and interactive media development, he balances an
understanding of the creative process with the ability
to successfully frame and deliver products & enabling
technologies that energize digital media publishing.
His ongoing efforts will extend the reach of Adobe's
line of award-winning Web graphics, digital imaging,
video, and illustration products into diverse network
publishing workflows. After earning his MBA, Andrew
joined Apple Computer where he spent six years in
international product marketing. Prior to Adobe, he
was director of marketing at a small "Siliwood" startup,
pioneering the distillation of leading edge digital
media technology within the creative community. An
amateur filmmaker and musician, Andrew holds a bachelor's
degree in international relations from U.C. Davis
and an M.B.A. from the Leavey School of Business at
Santa Clara University.

field as a Developer, Architect, Project Director,
Author, Security Professional etc. He has worked for/with
many organizations including HP, US Air Force, Qantas
Airways, MCI,AT&T and Ford Motor Co. Currently
he is a Member Of Technical Staff - Global Commerce
Technologies at Cisco Systems Inc. His industry certifications
include CISSP (Security), MCSE (Microsoft), LCNC (Lotus
Notes), SCJP (Java)et al. He has talked at various
occasions including HP e-Services developers conference
(Security), ACM conference in Virginia (Security/rbac),
brown bag lunches and executive briefings at Cisco
Systems (XML), VTC/Productivity Council/IEEE HongKong(ebXML)
and Houston area CIOs (on Internet technologies).
Krishna is involved with RosettaNet, W3C XP initiative,
Sun's JCP and ebXML. His interests include dynamic
configurable trading networks, autonomous services
based ebusiness infrastructure, eBusiness services
in a chip/hardware device et al. Krishna lives in
silicon valley with his wife Usha and little son Kaushik.

Ulrike
Schäfer has set up INFOTAKT information design,
providing consulting, training, and implementation
services in standard based content management projects.
She has studied German language and literature, philosophy,
and computer science and had a teaching position at
the university of Würzburg until 1994. From 1994
to 2000 she worked at STEP GmbH as a software developer,
consultant, and project manager in document management
projects, giving also workshops on SGML and XML concepts.
Ulrike Schäfer left the company and set up INFOTAKT
information design to start working as an independent
consultant in April 2000. Since then she provides
consulting, training, and implementation services
in content management projects with the main focus
on analysis and redesign of information architectures
and processes, based on standards like SGML, XML and
related languages. Her customers are dealing with
various kinds of information, like publishers, industries
(technical documentation), and trade (business to
business / business to customer communication). Since
2001 she regularly provides courses on SGML and XML
concepts.

Ingrid
manages VIA informationsarchitekturen. By providing
consultancy as a main focus, VIA accompanies firms
that want their content resources to outlive rapidly
outdated media and thus be prepared for the constantly
shifting requirements of the media landscape. Within
this context VIA emphasises on the design and realisation
of forward-looking XML-based information architectures
and semantic nets. Ingrid worked since 1993 as independent
consultant, information architect, and trainer in
the field of SGML/XML-based (and related standards)
publishing, for both, industry and research. Moreover,
she is regularly teaching classes on SGML/XML at the
German Linguistic and the Computational Linguistic
Department of Heidelberg University. In 1999 she edited
together with Wiebke Möhr a book on advanced
SGML/XML projects in Germany. From 1993 to 1998 she
worked as free-lancer on different projects with the
Institute for Integrated Publication and Information
Systems of GMD in Darmstadt. Research focuses were
knowledge-based information access for hypermedia
reference works and the evaluation of machine-aided,
automated semantic encoding possibilities based on
an object-oriented database system. From 1991 to 1993
she worked with Texcel as application developer and
consultant. From 1988 to 1991 she worked, also in
the field of application development and consulting,
with Manfred Krüger, later MID/Information
Logistics Group in Heidelberg.

Scott is Director of Professional Services at RivCom
a consultancy and services company specializing in
helping businesses adopt XML technologies to meet
their information management and distribution needs.
RivCom has been actively involved in the development
of the XML family of standards as active members of
W3C (including the XSL Working Group), OASIS, as joint
project leader of the STEP/SGML harmonisation initiative
under ISO, and as software development lead in the
recently completed European XML/EDI Pilot Project.

Mr
Pekka Siltanen is a senior research scientist at VTT
(The Technical Research Center of Finland). He received
his masters degree (M.Sc, 1990) and licenciate degree
(Ph.Lic,1995) in Computer Science from the University
of Helsinki. He has been carrying out several research
projects in document management systems, product modeling,
image processing and CAD development. His current
research interest include product data and document
management and product data exchange.

Simon has been an ardent advocate and implementor
of XML since 1997. He is a co-author of the IETF/W3C
XML Signature specification and is also a contributor
to the XML Encryption effort. Before joining Entrust,
he explored new online information technologies at
IBM and developed biomedical research software at
the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine. Ed
holds a Master of Engineering degree from the University
of Alberta.

Smith is Chief Technology Officer for Computer Sciences
Corporation in Europe where he is responsible for
strategic technology innovation and early stage vendor
incubation and solutions development. He also directs
Ontology.Org, a CSC sponsored research forum studying
interoperability among enterprise and B2B applications.
As a founding member, Howard is leading CSC’s participation
in the Business Process Management Initiative (bpmi.org)
that is standardising the management of business processes
that span multiple enterprise applications, corporate
departments, and business partners, both behind the
firewall and over the Internet. In 1998, through a
strategic alliance with CommerceNet Howard became
an invited expert to the eCo Working Group [eco.commerce.net]
which developed an architectural specification and
semantic recommendations that have influenced many
of the leading e-commerce interoperability and Web
Services frameworks in practical use today. His current
interests are focussed on Business Process Management,
next generation Enterprise Integration, organisational
agility and the Knowledge Level Business.

(Dick) Smith is the Director of Companywide Applications
within Boeing’s Shared Services Group. He has responsibility
for providing the leadership and direction for companywide
information systems, including the delivery of electronic
commerce and e-business systems. Other responsibilities
include services such as architecture, database administration,
planning and software methodology assistance for applications
projects. Prior to the Boeing/McDonnell Douglas (MDC)
merger, Dick was in a similar position reporting to
the McDonnell Douglas CIO. At MDC, Dick also served
as Director of MDC Missile Company Information Systems,
as well as other Engineering and program management
positions in MDC product divisions. Dick has an undergraduate
degree in Aerospace Engineering, and a Masters degree
in Business Management

has been specialising in XML since 1997, when he founded
Boynings Consulting. He provides advice to the UK
Government in its adoption of XML and has written
the "best practice guidelines" used for developing
Government XML schemas. He also advises and develops
schemas for several Government Departments. He is
a member of the UK Government Interoperability and
GovTalk working groups. He has worked with major commercial
companies such as NatWest and Microsoft on their XML
projects. Paul is the author of XML Design and Implementation
and co-author of Beginning XML and Professional XSL
(all Wrox Press) and a founder and CTO of alphaXML
Limited.

Speyer works as a senior consultant media at the Telecom
Media Networks department of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young
in the Netherlands. He received his masters degree
in Mechanical Engineering of the Delft University
of Technology in 1986. He has been working on adaptive
filtering techniques, information retrieval, database
management, content management, editorial processes
and printing systems. Formerly he worked for 7 years
as a consultant at Wolters Kluwer on editorial processes
and production systems. Before that he was a researcher
for 2 years at TNO in the Netherlands.

is responsible for educating developers, customers,
partners and employees about Extensible Markup Language
(XML) and for representing Bowstreet in the XML community.
Tauber has played a role in the development of XML
since he joined the movement that first identified
the need for a web content labeling standard in the
mid-1990s. More recently, Tauber was principal editor
of the Directory Services Markup Language (DSML),
an XML schema for representing directory contents
and structure for seamless business-to-business Internet
commerce. DSML is one of the key ingredients of the
Bowstreet Business Web Factory, a system for dynamically
creating, managing, mass-customizing and linking web
sites for B2B e-commerce.

in Paris, France. Previously she was the founder and
President of Infinite Intelligence, Inc., a consulting
firm specializing in the application of advanced techniques

problems. She has over fifteen years of experience
designing and developing intelligent systems for manufacturing,
sales, finance & systems management. Margaret
was an early proponent of "business rules" as a knowledge
representation technique and has extensive experience
modelling, specifying and implementing business rules
for clients in the mortgage, mortgage insurance, and
mutual fund industries. She has published a dozen
papers and articles on the topics of business rules,
database management performance, and expert systems

S. Thompson was a member of the SGML Working Group
of the World Wide Web Consortium which designed XML,
is the author of the XED, the first free XML instance
editor and co-author of the LT XML toolkit and is
currently a member of the XSL and XML Schema Working
Groups of the W3C. He currently holds a World Wide
Web Consortium Fellowship, and is editor of the Structures
part of the XML Schema draft W3C recommendation. He
has presented many papers and tutorials on SGML, DSSSL,
XML, XSL and XML Schemas in both industrial and public
settings over the last five years.

Tidwell is a Senior Programmer at IBM. He has almost
twenty years of programming experience, and has been
working with XML-like applications for several years.
He was a speaker at the first XML conference in 1997,
and has spoken on XML, Java, and Security topics at
conferences around the world. His job as a Cyber Evangelist
is to help customers evaluate and implement XML technology.
He holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science from
Vanderbilt University and a Bachelors Degree in English
from the University of Georgia.

Since
1996, Pasi has been doing research related to structured
SGML/XML documents at the Department of Computer Science
and Information Systems in the University of Jyväskylä.
At the moment he works in a project called inSGML,
which is developing, testing and customizing methods
for the SGML/XML standardization process especially
for industrial purposes. The work is related to his
Doctoral Thesis, whose subject is usability of structured
documents. During the years 1998-2000 he worked in
a project called EULEGIS, which was developing a unified
interface for different legal databases in the Internet.
Before that he worked in RASKE project, which developed
means and methods for deployment of structured SGML
documents in major Finnish public sector organisations.
RASKE was a joint project, whose participants included
Parliament of Finland, and ministries of the Finnish
government.
