ABSTRACT

BibTeX is the defacto standard for bibliographic data in the scientific community. The advantages of BibTeXML are the availability of BibTeX data on the one hand, and the powerful transformation and presentation methods provided by XML on the other hand.

BibTeX, the bibliography management program and format, is the defacto standard for bibliographic data in the scientific community. In this paper we present BibTeXML, an XML representation of BibTeX data. The advantages of BibTeXML are the availability of BibTeX data in the scientific community on the one hand, and the powerful transformation and presentation methods provided by XML on the other hand. Our model is based on BibTeXML as the source format, which is transformed into BibTeX data whenever necessary (ie, when LaTeX documents need to be processed). BibTeXML also is an ideal starting point for generating other kinds of bibliographies, such as HTML versions. Furthermore, we present methods for transforming BibTeXML data into a format similar to topic maps, which can then be used for browsing through a BibTeXML bibliographic database.

Erik Wilde - Erik Wilde is currently working at the Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory (TIK), which is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich.
