New XML Tools Announced in February

RXP; Validating XML Parser

Release 1.0 of RXP, a validating XML parser in C was announced this month. Previous versions were available only for individual, research and educational use. This version is licensed under the GNU Public Licence. RXP is a product of the Language Technology Group, Human Communication Resarch Centre, University of Edinburgh. RXP can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/pub/richard/rxp.tar.gz

XML Spy for XML Authoring

Version 1.4 of XML Spy - a new shareware XML editor for Windows was announced this month. The new version fixes a bug in writing the <?xml version=...?> XML declaration and includes new support for editing of 3DML files (3DML is a XML-like 3D markup language developed by Flatland, Inc. Oracle XML Utilities

Generating XML files dynamically from the data in the existing database is a task that lots of folks would like help with. If the existing database is Oracle, you can check out some free utilities and demos for doing just this at: http://www.oracle.com/xml/plsxml/default.html

XwingML; Freeware Java/XML Platform

XwingML, an innovative development freeware platform for merging XML and Java code allows users to create XML documents (in common English) that generate Java Swing classes to create graphical user interfaces. Download a copy from http://www.bluestone.com/xml. Bluestone also distributes XML-Server and a developer toolkit called Visual-XML.

XML & Java Web Tutorial

A new tutorial showing how to use XML and Java to build web and Internet based applications by Nazmul Idris is now available on the Web.

The tutorial shows you how to use:

XML DTD Generator

DTDGenerator Frontend allows you to upload an XML file from your computer to the server and get a DTD to which the document would conform. DTDGenerator is written by Michael Kay of ICL. DTDGenerator Frontend runs at: http://www.pault.com/Xmltube/dtdgen.html

New XML EDI Tool

Redix International Inc. recently announced a new XML/EDI tool that converts any file (EDI or proprietary) to XML. The tool gives you ability to define your own interface between your application software and XML formats, regardless of whether your application format is EDI based or proprietary. Besides Any-to-XML, some other features of the XML/EDI Authoring Tool include:

  • Validate input data/file (loop structure, data type, etc) before constructing XML
  • Extract code definitions from EDI standard
  • User defined document type
  • User defined tag name
  • GUI to help you maintain your message definitions and conversion criteria
  • Wizard approach to help you build your conversion criteria

Several examples including X12, EDIFACT, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), Oracle ERP, and SAP as well as a tutorial are provided with the tool to guide you through the steps to interface with the tool. You can find the XML/EDI tool at http://www.redix.com.
