Metastructures Conference '99

XML/EDI, EXPRESS, STEP, Topic Maps, Tree-Automata, Groves, DOM, ICE, XML Schema, OMG MOF, UML, CDIF, WONDEL, COBRA, RMI/EJB and DCOM/ActiveX, RMI/EJB and DCOM/ActiveX!

Metastructures '99 is the annual gathering of those on the leading edge of information technology. As always, this years conference provided insights into the newest technical breakthroughs on the information processing front. Some of the conference had a Web technology focus. But presenters also addressed business implications/opportunities spawned by these advances in technology.

This year quite a number of presentations focused on Topic Maps, the soon to be published ISO standard based on Hytime. In addition to a tutorial was given by the world's leading experts, Steven R. Newcomb, President, TechnoTeacher, Inc., and Michel Biezunski, InfoLoom. Presentations about Topic Maps included:

  • Semantic Networks and Topic Maps, Eric Freeze, Electronic Data Foundry, Inc.
  • Topic Maps - Enterprise Portals, by Didier Martin, TALVA Inc.
  • Technical Issues on Topic Maps, Dr. Hans Holger Rath, Director of Consulting, STEP Electronic Publishing Solutions GmbH

The DOM and groves was another hot topic for this years conference. Presentations included:

  • Groves and the DOM by Ken Levy, DataChannel and Peter Newcomb, TechnoTeacher, Inc.
  • Groves at the Woodward Company by David Williams, The Woodward Company, and Zanetta Hancock, ISOGEN
  • Groves for Applications by Graham Moore, Consultant, DPSL

The technical terms highlighted above in the subtitle were gleaned from the abstracts of papers presented on August 16 - 18 in Montreal. The content was highly technical. But for those of you that find this challenge exciting, enlightening, or even entertaining, Montreal was the place to be this August. Mark your calendars for next year!
