Jon
Bosak Steps Down from W3C Post
On February 10, 2000, Jon Bosak
(Sun) stepped down as head of the W3C XML Coordination
Group. Having organized and served as the chair
of the working group which
developed XML, and as head of the Coordination Group since its
inception, Jon has been intimately linked with XML from the
beginning. The Web community owes Bosak a great debt for
his
contribution in guiding XML to its current state.
Jon recently served as
one of the chairs for the XTech 2000 developers conference in San Jose, California. In his
opening keynote, Jon reviewed the status of XML and
explained his resignation from W3C. According to
Jon, he has withdrawn from W3C activities in order to
concentrate on Oasis. In particular, Jon will
champion the new XML.org registry and
repository.
According to Bosak, XML allows people sharing a
common data exchange problem to work out an open
solution to that problem. The agreement on a
solution takes the form of industry DTDs, schemas, and
namespaces. XML.org is a registry and repository
for these critical ingredients. The repository
has to be set up for a kind of permanence so that we
can identify and access the agreements that will
serve as the basis for XML interactions on the
Web.
According to Bosak, requirements for an XML
registry include:
- self-supporting
- universally accessible
- trusted and vendor-neutral
- based completely on international standards
- low cost of entry for individuals and small
organizations
- distributed model
W3C has appointed Dave Hollander (of
CommerceNet) and Michael Sperberg-McQueen (of the W3C staff) as co-chairs of the XML Coordination Group and XML
Plenary, to replace Jon. Following the
opening keynote by Jon Bosak at XTech 2000, Dave
Hollander rose and presented Jon with a plaque reading
“In appreciation for his vision, leadership and
dedication the W3C XML Plenary on this 10th day of
February, 2000 reserves for Jon Bosak in perpetuity
the XML name xml:Father”
