Extreme Markup 2001; Head for Montreal!

GCA's summer event, Extreme Markup, is just as it sounds-- Extreme!  If you want to get to the heart of technical issues surrounding markup and how we can use it, this is the event for you. Presentations at this year's conference include:

  • The Gnome DOM Engine
  • The Syntactic Web: Syntax and Semantics on the Web
  • Using Natural Language Processing in the Construction of Topic Maps
  • Implementing Concurrent Markup in XML

Extreme Markup will begin on Sunday, August 12 with tutorials.  Tutorials will also be offered on Monday August 13 and the conference will run from Tuesday, August 14 through Friday, August 17.

This year's featured keynote is Elaine Svenonious, Professor Emerita,Department of Information Studies, UCLA, has done major research in the areas of cataloging and classification, with particular emphasis on the design and evaluation of cataloging systems in an automated environment. In her recent book The Intellectual Foundation of Information Organization, MIT Press, Cambridge, 2000 Dr. Svenonious directly addresses the ways that those who are involved in the design and development of electronic information systems can use the knowledge of information classification.

In her keynote address at Extreme Dr. Svenonious will review what is meant by "intellectual foundation" and then focus on a particular component of it: the epistemological and semantic presuppositions underlying knowledge
representations: semantic structures for organizing information by subject,
such as classifications, subject heading systems and topic maps. Twentieth
century philosophers have addressed the problem of knowledge through
language, in particular, by examining the meaning of meaning. She will look
at three different approaches to the meaning of meaning, their implications
for the design of knowledge representations, and their impact on retrieval
effectiveness and compatibility.

In addition to the wealth of peer-reviewed papers, Extreme offers a number of presentations that are called "Late Breaking News."  These presentations focus on developments so new that they could not be submitted for peer review according to the conference schedule  This year, presenters of "Late Breaking News" include Eric Freese, ISOGEN International/DataChannel, H.Holger Rath, empolis Content Management, Jonathan Robie, Software AG, W.E. Perry, Fiduciary Automation, Nikita Ogievetsky, Cogitech, Patrick Durusau, Society of Biblical Literature and Matthew Brook O'Donnell, University of Surrey, MURATA Makoto, International University of Japan, Simon St. Laurent, O'Reilly & Associates, and Sam Hunting, and independent consultant.
